Libraries for Africa’s Future
With 46,5% of young South Africans unemployed (StatsSA, Q1 2023), innovative solutions are urgently needed.
This research project, supported by the University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer-Institut für Arbeitswirtschaft und Organisation (IAO), examines how digital public goods (DPI) in public libraries can address youth unemployment in South Africa.
This project leverages the extensive infrastructure of South African public libraries to provide tech-driven educational and social services to youth, particularly those not in employment, education, or training (NEETs).
Using a mixed-methods approach, we are mapping libraries' digital infrastructure, identifying global best practices for youth unemployment interventions, and analysed social and economic reintegration strategies.
